PHB has three studios at its Queen Alexandra
location, two of which are used for general presentation, mixing and single
presenter programming, and a third which is used solely for interviewing - but
which can be controlled by either of the other two studios. There is also
a satellite studio at St Marys' hospital which can also be used, connected to QA
via a dedicated FM radio link.
Studio one is PHB's flagship studio -
having only just been completed in July 2001. It contains a state of the
art broadcasting desk, along with two broadcast quality CD players, 3 minidisk
record/players, a double cassette deck and single turntable. This latter
is a shining example of the way that music is rapidly moving away from vinyl -
even for an impoverish hospital radion station!
Our second studio, Studio Two is purely for chat.
Three chairs and three microphones comprise the equipment list in here!
Studio two is designed so that it can be controlled from either one of studio
one or three, and controls are provided that enable presenters and guests in
this room to hear either studio. This studio is used to interview both
individual and groups of guests, and for programmes with more than one or two
presenters - often the case for request shows.
The aptly named third studio is Studio Three which was refitted in 1996 and went
live on air Christmas Eve that year. It houses a broadcast control
desk (Alice Soundtech 'A' Series), a microphone, two Technics compact disc
players, two Yamaha cassette decks, two Technics record turntables and
two Sony mini-disc players.
We also have space set aside for our extensive collection
of vinyl records, nearly 8,500 singles and 4,000 albums plus all our compact
discs and minidiscs. All music tracks are indexed on our computer
system. PHB rarely pays for any music, instead relying on very generous
donations from both businesses and the public... indeed cataloguing the record
library is an almost full-time occupation for our record librarian!
